Born Arthur Jackson in Jonesville, South Carolina, to David Jackson, a farmer and native of Virginia, and Emma Jackson, Arthur was the fourth of six children. His fraternal great-grandmother, Racheal Williams, was born 1810 in Virginia, and was commonly referred to as a mulatto. Arthur went on to marry Theo S. Jackson, who was 18 years older than him, and the mother of Herbert Miller and Katherine Miller, both natives of Tennessee. In South Carolina, Arthur made his living busking on the street and performing in patent-medicine shows. Peg Leg Sam gave his last medicine-show performance in 1972 in North Carolina, but continued to appear at music festivals in his final years.
He died in Jonesville in October 1977, at the age of 65.

INFO: O.V. Wright was one of the Memphis soul singers that most retained his original gospel roots on his R&B records. This soul classic was written by Roosevelt Jamison and alternate stories have him being rejected by Jim Stewart upon bringing the demo tape of Wright singing the song to Stax. Another, and to me more likely, story has Jamison bringing just the lyrics to Stax and seeing Steve Cropper, who subsequently kept the words, but without having heard the demo, was forced to come up with a new chord progression. Hence, the 3/4 I-V-IV progression of Otis compared to the 6/8 I-VIm-(IV-V) of O.V. Wright.

NOTES: While I love Otis Redding's version of this song, O.V.'s original is something else entirely. This record has a completely different atmosphere, darker and far more desperate. The guitar work is fantastic and Wright's vocal entry is achingly devastating.
